At Home Tattoo Removal
There are some cosmetic undertakings you might consider trying at home, saving some time and a few dollars in the process: clip your own toenails (straight across so you don’t get an ingrown nail); color your hair from a box or trim your own fringe. If you’re willing to risk an eerie orange glow; try a DIY fake tan, but don’t ever think about removing your tattoos at home without proper help.
Tattoos are permanent ink fused in the cells of your precious skin. There is no way for you to safely reverse that situation at home in your bathroom. All the most effective treatments necessitate some temporary damage to the skin in order to break down the ink in the tattoo. The least invasive option, laser therapy, can only be conducted by a trained professional. Even if you were able to get your hands on the equipment (and you can’t); the wrong setting could cause permanent and irreparable damage to your skin.
The most invasive treatments involve scraping the skin back to reveal fresh layers which haven’t been affected by the ink (try this at home and you will end up with a bloodied mess and almost certainly a big old scar) or slicing into to affected area and cutting away the inked section (excision). At home surgery is definitely not recommended.
So what can you do at home? There are topical type treatments, but it may take a while before you see any results: if you see any results. Trying to lighten a tattoo at home is a bit like trying to bleach your own teeth – it never really works as well or lasts as long as if you’d just gone to a professional (aka the dentist – the guy who went to college for years to qualify to do this… what makes you think you can do it in an afternoon after skim reading a pamphlet?).
Getting a tattoo causes a certain amount of damage in the first place; but hopefully the artist who applied your ink knew what they were doing and the whole thing was done hygienically and healed perfectly. Removing a tattoo is just as serious as applying one in the first place, but it usually costs more, takes longer (many treatments) and is far more painful. This isn’t something you can do without professional help.
The first thing you need to do is book a consultation (finally, something free) to find out what your options are. Every possible solution on the market isn’t appropriate for every individual. Depending on where your tattoo is, what you don’t like about it, how big it is and what kind of ink was used; a professional may be able to offer you some options but not others.
Some mistakes are easy to fix (think bad bleach job), others are best left in the hands of the professionals.
